What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a severe eye condition that can gradually affect your vision. It occurs when increased pressure in the eye damages the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. Over time, this damage can result in vision loss, typically starting with deteriorated peripheral (side) vision.

If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to tunnel vision and even blindness. It’s often called the “silent thief of sight” because it progresses slowly and painlessly, making regular eye exams crucial for early detection and effective management.

Who’s at Risk?

Glaucoma can affect anyone, but certain factors increase the risk of developing this eye condition.

  • Age (risk increases significantly after 60)
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Race and ethnicity (African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians)
  • People with thinner corneas
  • Past eye injuries or trauma to the eye
  • Medical conditions (diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease)
  • Long-term use of corticosteroid medications
  • Nearsightedness (myopia)

While these factors increase the risk of glaucoma, anyone can develop the condition, even without these risk factors.
