Recognizing the Signs: When Is It an Eye Emergency?

An eye emergency is any sudden, unexpected eye issue that requires immediate attention to prevent vision loss or severe damage. Signs and symptoms of an eye emergency can include:

  • Sudden vision changes (blurriness, double vision, or vision loss)
  • Eye injury
  • Foreign objects in the eye
  • Chemical exposure
  • Severe eye pain
  • Flashes of light
  • Floaters (dark spots)
  • Redness and swelling
  • Bulging eye
  • Sudden headaches (accompanied by vision changes)
  • Halos around lights

If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Guidelines for Handling Eye Emergencies

In an eye emergency, knowing what to do can make a significant difference. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t do:

What To Do

  • Seek immediate professional help
  • Rinse your eye gently with saline solution or clean water
  • Shield injured eyes with a protective shield or object like a paper cup

What Not To Do

  • Avoid rubbing or applying pressure to the eye
  • Don’t attempt to remove objects embedded in the eye
  • Avoid using cotton swabs or tweezers to remove foreign objects
  • Don’t put any ointments or drops in the eye unless advised by a medical professional
